The author had prepared thoroughly for writing this book.He accumulated most of the Jangar texts, descriptions of the epic singing, and biographies of the Jangar singers, all of which have been recorded in Russia,Mongolia and China. The author also paid close attention to distinguished scholars'research work on the Jangar all over the world. And most important of all,he has been to Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia many times to conduct fieldwork and to experience the living tradition of epic singing itself. On the Epic Jangar is a book which regards the epic Jangar a series of cantos and interprets it in connection with the whole Mongolian literary history, with Mongolian language family's epic traditions, and with the north Asian ethnic groups'epic traditions.Comparing with hundreds of other Mongolian epics, the author reaches the following conclusions:motif-series rae fundamental elements of the Mongolian epic. The epic can be roughly divided into three types according to the contents, quantities and sequence of those motif-series.These three types are:single-round epic,serial-round epic and paratactic-round epic representing the three stages of the evolution of the epic on the Mongolian Steppe.Jangar, with the paratactic-round structure, belongs to the third stage.Considering the cultural origins, social archetypes, vocabulary and geogragpical names, religions, early legends about the Jangar singers, the Oirat people's migration, and the evidence of the epic performance, the author arrives at a conclusion that the epic Jangar took its shape in the area of the Altai Mountains and the Ertix River from the 15th to the first half of the 17th century. As very improtant factors, the conditions of epic singing, such as the singer, the audience, and the oral tradition, are also discussed systematically in this book.
