instead与instead of
  instead——in place of，是副词，意思是“代替”，“更换”。被代替的成分往往省略，也可不必译出。如：
  （1） We usually play football in theafternoon. But we aren’t going to play footballthis afternoon. we’re going to play basketball in-stead.
  我们通常在下午踢足球，但今天下午我们不准备踢足球，而打篮球。
  （2） Mr Black was ill， so she was takinghis class instead.
  布莱克先生病了，所以她在代他的课。
  instead of是复合介词，意思是“代替”，后面需要有宾语。而这个宾语可以是名词、代词、动名词或介词短语。instead of后面的成分往往是被否定的。如：
  （1） I have come instead of my bro-ther. He is ill.（后接名词）
  我是代替我弟弟来的。他病了。
  （2） I’ll do it instead of him.（后接代词）
  我将代替他做。
  （3） Instead ofseeing the sights， Edison would spend thetime reading in the public library.（后接动名词）
  爱迪生不去游览，却经常在公共图书馆度过他的时间。
  （4） We’re going to read English inthe classroom instead of in the playground.
  （后接介词短语）
  我们将在教室里读英语而不在操场上读。
  instead和instead of的比较：
  We didn’t send Comrade Wang to Be-ijing. We send Comrade Li instead.
  我们没有派王同志去北京，而我们派李同志去作为代替。
  We sent Comrade Li to Beijing inste-ad of comrade wang.
  我们派李同志代替王同志去北京。
